Department Student Advisors (DSAs) are senior majors who are nominated by the departments, and make themselves available to students to answer questions about the department. DSAs know firsthand what it’s like to be in the major. They are available via email, and at special campus events to answer your questions.

In 20 words or less, what is the best thing about being part of this department?
So much of our learning in based in loving and critical relationships with one another, our community, and the land.

What is your biggest piece of advice to first years and sophomores about getting connected to this department?
Take one of the core classes and get hooked into conversations with other majors!

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned at K?
It’s okay to be wrong.

What has been your favorite class at K? Why?
Race, Law, and Politics with Justin Berry because this class helped me to put CES frameworks in conversation with Political Science.

How have you taken advantage of the open curriculum or experienced breadth in your education?
I’ve taken classes catered towards non-majors in Math, Biology, and took part in an independent study dedicated to researching the culture of the Harry Potter series. Even inside CES, I’ve had classes in Anthropology, Religion, and Political Science that all count towards my major.

What experiential education opportunities have you participated in?
I studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico! I also work in the Writing Center and I lived in the Ecojustice Living Learning House during my sophomore year.

What is your SIP?
Hopefully (coronavirus willing) I’ll return to Oaxaca and do a research/workshop combo through the Union of Community Museums to explore how indigenous language revitalization programs and land rights advocacy work co-inform one another.

What are your career aspirations/next steps after K?
Invest my energy and love into community building. I want to learn more about food justice and birth justice and find a place for myself where I can finally realize my aspiration to learn to photosynthesize.
